
Notarial Services Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need for my document to be notarized?
You must have a valid, unexpired government issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport) and the unsigned document to be notarized.
What if I don’t have an ID?
A NC notary may be able to use a “credible witness” to identify you. A credible witness is anyone that knows the principal signer and that the notary personally knows.
What is a principal signature?
A principal signature is the signature of the person named in the document, who holds the primary responsibility, right or ownership.
What questions may the notary ask me?
You will be asked: May I please see your government-issued photo ID?, What type of document(s) are we notarizing today?, Is the document(s) complete and ready for signature(s)?, Are you signing this document of your own free will?, Do you understand what you are signing?. You may also be asked: How many signatures are needed today?, Are there any witnesses required for this document?, as well as non-personal questions such as the date or the weather outside, if applicable.
Can a NC notary notarize an out of state document?
Yes, as long as the notarization takes place within the state of North Carolina.
Do I need to sign the document before I appear before a notary?
No, you must sign the document in the presence of a commissioned notary. Documents already signed prior to appearing before the notary will not be able to be notarized.
Can a NC notary perform weddings?
No, an NC notary commission alone does not authorize performing wedding ceremonies.

Are there online or remote services available?
Yes, NC allows remote online notarization (RON) through authorized, secure platforms. More to come with JN Notary Services offering RON later in the summer of 2026.
Can a NC notary explain the legal effects of the document being signed?
No, NC notaries are not attorneys licensed to practice law in North Carolina, and may not give legal advise or accept fees for legal advice.
What is an e-notary?
An e-notary is a commissioned notary who passes a specific 3-hour course to be able to perform electronic notarizations.
What if I don’t know what type of document I need to be notarized?
The NC Secretary of State website offers forms for review and you are able to choose from those, without the advice from the notary.
What is a mobile notary?
A mobile notary is a commissioned public official who travels to a client’s location to perform authorized notarization services.
